Retail Sales Up Slightly; Furniture Sales Drop

Retail sales ticked up 0.2 percent in November, according to the latest data from the U.S. Commerce Department.

The sales increase was in line with expectations and falls in line with small or no increases since July.

Furniture store sales dropped 0.3 percent, as did sales at building materials stores.

Excluding the 0.4 percent drop in automobile sales, overall retail sales were up 0.4 percent for the month.

Online sales climbed 7.3 percent in the last 12 months, compared to a 2.4 percent drop for department stores.

Consumers continue to dine out with sales at restaurants and bars climbing 0.7 percent.
