Mattress Firm Posts 3Q Income of $23.9 Million

Bedding retailer Mattress Firm (NASDAQ: MFRM) reported net income of $23.9 million for the third quarter ended Nov. 3 compared to net income of $15.6 million in the same quarter last year.

Third quarter net sales climbed 50.7 percent to $699.5 million, from 4464.3 million in the same quarter last year. Same store sales for the quarter increased 8.5 percent.

The retailer announced last week plans to acquire Sleepy’s http://www.sleepys.com bolstering its march to become a national bedding retail chain. In the third quarter, the retailer opened 87 stores and closed 15 brining the company’s total store count to 2,295 locations.

For the nine-month period, net income for the retailer was $51.2 million compared to $37.6 million in the prior year’s nine-month period. Net sales for the first nine months were $1.9 billion, a 59.2 percent increase from net sales of $1.2 billion in the first nine months of last year.
