Ikea Begins Demolition to Construct Larger Store in Seattle Area

Ikea has begun demolishing a covered parking structure to make way for a new, 406,000-square-foot store in Renton, Wash.

Store construction will commence later this year after demolition completion and site preparation. Ikea is recycling, repurposing or salvaging as much of the existing building’s equipment, materials and parts as possible.

“We are thrilled by the progress represented by this demolition milestone as we prepare to construct a new and updated Seattle-area store,” said Lars Petersson, U.S. president of Ikea. “After more than 20 years operating at this Renton location, we look forward to many more years, but now with a new store that will offer Seattle-area customers an updated, spacious and enhanced Ikea shopping experience.”

The original, single-level structure was built in 1979 as a warehouse for aerospace electronics and Ikea converted it to a retail store in October 1994.

The new store will consist of two levels, provide nearly 1,600 parking spaces and offer a more current layout. It is slated to open in Spring 2017.

Deacon Corp. will build the new store and plans reflect the same architectural design for which Ikea stores are known worldwide.
