The goal is to give design students a platform to present their product ideas for a well-respected retailer and the chance to see their ideas produced. Matthew Bird, assistant design professor at RISD, will be guiding students and reviewing all products throughout the fall semester.
Students will design innovative product for three core categories including:
- The Connected Home, which responds to the impact of technology on all aspects of home living and cord management;
- Healthy Food, which offers answers to food preparation, cabinet storage and meals-on-the-go based on current health trends; and
- The Celebrity Effect, which creates a customized storage and organization solution for the increased use of make-up, jewelry and nail polish.
Final products will be hosted online for a public vote Nov. 13-15. Customers can vote for their favorite designs to determine the People’s Choice Winner.
Prototypes will be sent to Kikkerland Design and The Container Store for a jury of buyers, merchandisers and industrial design professionals, who will determine the pieces selected for production.
Winners in two categories, Academic and People’s Choice, will be announced at an awards ceremony on Dec. 4.
“We are honored to partner with Kikkerland for their annual design challenge,” said Sharon Tindell, chief merchandising officer of The Container Store. “We’re eager to see what these bright and talented RISD students will dream up in the way of home organization.”
