Retail Sales Up 0.2%; Furniture Struggles

U.S. retail sales climbed 0.2 percent in August, indicating domestic demand, according to the Commerce Department.

Retail sales, excluding automobiles and gasoline, increased 0.3 percent. The increase follows Commerce’s revised 0.7 percent increase in July.

Clothing stores posted 0.4 percent sales increase.

Sales at furniture stores in August did not keep pace. Despite a strong housing market, furniture retailers saw a 0.9 percent decline in sales.
