Hooker Furniture 1Q Net Income Soars 73%

Hooker Furniture (NASDAQ: HOFT) reported a 73 percent increase in second quarter net income of $3.9 million for the period ended Aug. 2.
Net income for the same period last year was $2.3 million.
Net sales for the second quarter were $60.1 million, a 4.1 percent increase over net sales of $54.9 million in the second quarter last year.
For the first half of the year, Hooker reported net income of $7.4 million compared to $5.1 million in the prior-year period. Net sales for the first half of the year was $121.1 million, a 4.1 percent increase over $116.3 million in the first six months of last year.
"It was a very good quarter, both top and bottom line, across all segments of our business," said Paul B. Toms Jr., chairman and CEO. "This is especially gratifying considering summer is traditionally the weakest quarter for our industry."
