Retail Sales Climb 0.6%

U.S. consumers boosted their spending on nearly all categories during July, giving the economy a boost going into the last half of the year.
According to the U.S. Commerce Department, retail sales were up 0.6 percent in July compared to sales in June. Last month, retail sales remained flat in comparison with May sales.
Automobiles were a big winner for the month. Excluding car sales, retail sales climbed 0.4 percent for the month.
July spending on furniture climbed 0.8 percent in comparison to June, and 6.1 percent when compared with July 2014. Sales at general merchandise stores, department stores and electronics retailers dropped.
