Coconis Golf Event Raises $70K for Autism

Home furnishings retailer Coconis Furniture recently hosted its 6th annual Tee It Up Fore Autism golf tournament.

More than 130 golfers and 30-plus companies participated in the event that raised more than $70,000 to benefit the National Autism Association of Southeast Ohio

For the sixth year in a row Serta Mattress Co. was the title platinum sponsor of the event.

This year’s featured guest speakers were Jacqueline and Chris Laurita, celebrity stars on the hit reality Bravo show “Real Housewives of New Jersey.” The Laurita’s have an 8-year-old son diagnosed with autism. Since his diagnosis, they have embraced the autism community over the last two years and speak all over the country raising autism awareness.

Ninety percent of funds raised remain locally in southeast Ohio and are used to fund the Family Grants programs.

In Ohio autism treatment is not covered by insurance, therefore families are left to pay out of pocket or go without necessary treatments and medical therapies.

“Autism does not have to be a lifelong disorder, but can be managed, improved, and sometimes full recovery is possible,” said Shannon Coconis, president of the Ohio autism association. “There is no reason a child should be locked inside of autism because of a lack of funds; the NAA-SEO exists to help families’ battle autism and kids recover. The Tee It Up Fore Autism charity outing would not be a success without the help of the furniture industry.”

The Serta Company along with many other furniture companies and representatives have stepped up to make this a success. Ashley Furniture, Sheelys, Tempur-Pedic, and countless others participated.

“This is the best and most rewarding thing we do,” said Randy Coconis, president of Coconis. “I have seen firsthand how getting the kids the proper help and therapy at an early age can make a huge difference in their lives. When parents say ‘thank you with tears in their eyes, you know you are doing something right.”

Over the 6 years the golf tournament has raised $305,000.
