FastFact: Consumer Services Costs Continue to Increase

During the Great Recession, households had to cope with the dramatic rise in health care and housing costs, along with an increasing cost of food and accommodations.
These necessary items came out of a smaller budget during the Recession, which contributed to the stall in expenditures on durable and non-durable goods.
While consumers spent less on transportation, recreation continued to rise during the Recession, similar to the spending increase on recreation and entertainment during the Great Depression.
