FastFact: Housing Costs Continue to Increase

Since 2000, spending on housing, including rent and utilities, has continued to grow rapidly each year.
An 85.6 percent increase in 15 years has left consumers with little room for spending on durable and non-durable goods. In the same period, expenditures on furniture grew 33 percent.
The biggest hit to spending on furniture came during the recession, when furniture expenditures dropped steadily for three years and 11 percent in 2009 alone. The housing industry, on the other hand, was largely unaffected by the recession. It continued to rise steadily, only slowing its upward trend.
Since the peak of the recession, spending on furniture has been on the rise, posting a 20 percent increase since 2009. This is positive news, as housing has only increased 18 percent during the same time. With more people spending money on furniture and other durable goods,
