FastFact: Spending on Services Climbs, Furniture Spending Drops

The last 15 years have brought a shift in how consumers are spending their money. Spending on services and lifestyle expenditures has increased, while spending on durable goods such as home furnishings and automobiles have fallen to make up the difference.
Since 2000, spending on services has increased 3.7 points to 67.6 percent of total personal expenditures. Spending on durable goods, on the other hand, has fallen 2.5 points to 10.9 percent of total personal expenditures.
Spending on non-durable goods, such as food and clothing, also declined during this period, falling 1.7 points to 21.5 percent of total personal expenditures.
