FastFact: Furniture Sales Breakdown via Distribution Channel

This week we continue the detailing of distribution channels in the furniture industry with a breakdown of the percent of sales of particular product categories in each of the main distribution channels.

Upholstery is primarily sold in stores. In 2012, 83.9 percent of upholstered furniture was purchased in a brick-and-mortar store, while 8.6 percent was sold online. General merchandising stores can be attributed to for 4.2 percent of sales in the upholstery category. This summary leaves 1.5 percent to other modes of distribution.

Case goods are largely sold in stores, with 60.4 percent of sales. Online sales account for 14.4 percent of sales in the. Discount department stores accounted for 7 percent of sales, and warehouses contributed 4 percent of case good sales.

Home office and computer-related products are typically purchased in stores, with a share of 35.3 percent of sales. A 31 percent share of this category is purchased online, and another 15.1 percent of home office and computer products are found in warehouse clubs and supercenters.

Online distribution for the outdoor and patio category accounts for 33.8 percent of sales, while 23 percent of sales occurred in retail stores. Home centers sold 15 percent of this category’s share and 11.9 percent of sales can be attributed to warehouse clubs and supercenters. General merchandise stores account for 9.4 percent of casual furniture sales.

The bedding sector is primary purchased in stores, mainly specialty bedding stores with 78.2 percent of sales. Next, at 11.5 percent, products from the bedding category are purchased online. Only 5.8 percent of bedding is purchased from department stores.
