FastFact: Furniture Stores Hold 64.5% of 2014 Sales

Today’s FastFact zeroes in on the changes in distribution channels since 2002.

Brick-and-mortar stores are still the leading source of furniture sales. The channel of furniture and home furnishings stores held 64.5 percent of sales in 2014. 

In 2014, e-tailers ended the year with 17.8 percent of the total distribution. Warehouse clubs and supercenters increase by only 0.4 percent in the past 12 years, totaling 4 percent now. General merchandising stores account for 3.4 percent of total distribution in the industry. 

Discount department stores have seen a significant decrease in the past 12 years. These stores account for 2.5 percent of purchasing in the industry. Regular department stores were 1.8 percent of distribution in 2014.

Home center and other building materials have seen a very insignificant increase of 0.1 percent. In 2014, this sector totaled 2.4 percent of the industry.
