Port Truck Drivers Walk off Job

Truck drivers responsible for moving product from the Los Angeles port system walked offer the job Monday to dispute their wages and employment status.

Members of the Teamster union started picketing yesterday at the ports targeting four non-union trucking companies that transport cargo to and from the ports’ terminals.

Jon Slangerup, CEO of the Port of Long Beach, said dockworkers were working and truckers had been able to enter and exit the impacted terminals without delay.

“We do not expect that there will be any adverse impact to Port terminals or our ability to continue the outstanding progress that everyone has made in recent weeks to clear the congestion backlog and return to normal operations,” he said.

At the Los Angeles Port, cargo was still flowing, according to Phillip Sanfield, spokesman.

The Teamsters union has been trying to organize drivers at the ports saying employers of the four trucking companies are classifying drivers as independent contractors instead of employees.
