GoodWeave, the international nonprofit organization that works to stop child labor in the carpet industry, has established an emergency fund to assist in the wake of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake Saturday in Nepal.
The death toll from the quake is currently at least 3,617 people and continues to rise and more than 6,500 people have been injured.
GoodWeave said some of the most vulnerable and affected people in natural disasters are those living in poverty, especially children. The organization’s emergency fund will help ensure the safety and recovery of such people. According to Nina Smith, executive director of GoodWeave, programs will focus on reducing the vulnerability of people in such disasters. Donations will help fund water, food, blankets and other household necessities for those in need.
GoodWeave’s center for rescued children in Hamro Ghar was damaged in the earthquake, but all the staff and children are safe.
Donations can be made through GoodWeave online.
