FastFact: Under 5 Age Group to Post Significant Gains

Demographic shifts over the next five to 10 years will influence the demand for youth furniture. Population projections provide a basis of what can be expected the category’s growth.

Over the next 10 years, the under 5 age group will likely have the greatest increase in population with a 5.2 percent climb. This demographic group is projected to grow 0.5 percent annually. The three older groups will see more slopes, with only slight growth.

Between 2015 and 2018, the 5-to-9 year age segment is expect to decrease by 1.4 percent, still recovering from the dip in birthrates during the Great Recession. In the years following 2018, the under 5 group will graduate into the 5-to-9 group, resulting in a projected 4 percent increase.

It will be another 10 years before the grandchildren of the Baby Boomers spur a jump in the tween/teen group.
