The demolition of 19 buildings started Thursday in Burbank, Calif., to make room for a new Ikea store.
The new store will be located less than a mile from the company’s oldest store in the western United States. The current 242,000-square-foot store sits on more than 6 acres along Interstate 5.
By comparison, the new store will boast 456,000 square feet, 1,700 parking spaces and will sit on 22 acres.
“We are thrilled by the progress represented by this demolition milestone as we prepare to construct our new version of Ikea Burbank,” said Rob Olson, Ikea U.S. CFO. “With nearly 25 years operating in Burbank, we look forward to many more years at this new location where we can offer many of our Southern California customers an updated, spacious and enhanced Ikea shopping experience.”
Construction at the site will begin in the fall.
