ASFD Hosts Legal Design Seminar

Noted patent attorneys from Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice will provide an orientation session for design students on the importance of original design during next month’s High Point Market.

Sponsored by the American Society of Furniture Designers and held at The Bienenstock Library April 21 at 2 p.m., Jack Hicks and Jake Wharton will present and field questions on hot to protect and respect design using intellectual property law.

Both Hicks and Wharton have a wealth of experience in advising furniture designers and manufacturers on legal matters. 

Hicks has more than 25 years of experience guiding home furnishing and design companies through all stages of the intellectual property process. He has written, prosecuted and litigated patents, trademarks and copyrights throughout the world on hundreds of furniture-related designs. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America, North Carolina Super Lawyers and North Carolina Legal Elite. 

Wharton, a partner with Womble Carlyle and registered patent attorney, has served as a lead litigator on disputes concerning furniture designs and is chief author of Womble Carlyle’s Furniture Law Blog.
