Shane Spiller, of family-owned Spiller Furniture in Tuscaloosa, Ala., is the NAHFA 2015 Retailer of the Year in the category of businesses with sales volume of $10 million or more.
Spiller Furniture and Mattress is a 13-store chain of furniture stores located in West Alabama and East Mississippi. The retailer was founded in 1948 by James E. Spiller Jr. and continued to grow under the leadership of his son Mike Spiller and now his grandson Shane Spiller. This chain serves its customers with in-house financing options and a large selection of merchandise.
Chris Cooley, of Lake Havasu, Ariz.-based Michael Alan Distinctive Home is the NAHFA 2015 Retailer of the Year in the category of businesses with a sales volume less than $10 million. Michael Alan was created by Abner Schultz and Shirley Schultz in the early 1980s and quickly became a local furniture and design destination. Daughters Chris Cooley and Carrie Hemme bought the business in 1992. Cooley and Hemme credit their 24-member Michael Alan team for much of the retailer’s success.
The 2015 North American Home Furnishings Retailer of the Year awards will be presented May 17 at the annual Home Furnishings Networking Conference in Orlando, Fla.
“Congratulations to Shane, Chris and to their entire teams,” said Sharron Bradley, NAHFA’s CEO. “They are shining examples of outstanding retailers and both have contributed so much to their communities, the industry and our association.”
NAHFA members in good standing were nominated by members of the home furnishings industry based on their exemplary service to the industry and to their communities and for providing an exceptional customer experience in their store. A selection committee comprised of two members of NAHFA’s board of directors; two NAHFA members; two manufacturers; two service providers/suppliers; and two members of the industry media, reviewed the nominations.
“Let me first tell you, what a privilege it was to be included in this process,” said Robert Bolton, Ashley Furniture HomeStores in Beaumont, Texas. “I learned valuable insights about each of these businesses represented. I am amazed how much our retail families contribute to their communities, industry, and businesses. Surely each of these nominees are fine models of what we all strive to achieve.”
