FastFact: Projected Birth Rate Could be Boon for Youth Furniture

This week’s FastFact factoid marks the beginning of a series detailing demographic movement in the next five to 10 years, and how these shifts will impact the youth category.

The series begins with a background on the history of birthrates in the U.S., and an estimate of rates for the future.

In 1957, the birth count reached a high of 4.3 million, the count did not see, nor surpass such levels again until 2007, with 4.32 million births. The years following 2007 posted an 8.6 percent decline in births.

Births are beginning to creep up with projections indicating a growth rate of 1.4 percent every five years. This increase in births will continue until reaching another peak in 2045. Population numbers in the under 5 age group will increase and will increase demand for youth furniture.
