Consumers these days are spending more on services and less on durable goods.
Furniture is a percentage of personal consumption expenditures. There are three categories under the personal consumption umbrella.
These categories are durable goods, nondurable goods and services.
The furniture industry is part of the durable goods sector. Durable goods has experienced a decrease of 1.5 percent between 2006 and the second quarter of 2014.
To compare, the non-durable goods subcategory has kept a constant hold on its share at 22.4 percent. And the percentage share lost by durable goods was gained by services – up 1.5 points.
