December Retail Sales Slip; Furniture Sales Up

U.S. retail sales slipped 0.9 percent in December as demand for goods fell nearly across the board. The bright spot for the home furnishings industry — receipts at furniture stores climbed 0.8 percent.
The U.S. Commerce Dept. said retail sales excluding cars, gasoline, building materials and food service fell 0.4 percent last month following a 0.6 percent increase in November.
Sales last month were held back by a 1.6 percent drop in sales of electronics and appliances, and a 0.3 percent decline in clothing sales. Online sales dropped 0.3 percent.
