Surya Donates to Project Mala in Honor of Customers

The funds will be used to provide the children of Surya weavers with classroom education, uniforms, meals and medical care, and will also support a facilities expansion project at one of Project Mala’s six schools. Additionally, a portion of the donation will be allocated to a recently introduced program that provides preschool tuition for young girls so that they are able to enter primary school with the same advantage as boys of a similar age.

“Coming myself from a small village in Northern India where many of our weavers live, I understand the importance of education in empowering children to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams,” said Satya Tiwari, president Surya. “In a similar way, our customers empower us and inspire us each day to grow as a company. We are pleased to honor them by making this important, and impactful, donation to Project Mala.”

This donation builds upon a partnership between Surya and Project Mala announced earlier this year, wherein Surya agreed to sponsor 160 students annually. To further support Project Mala’s educational initiatives, Surya has increased its overall annual financial contribution from approximately $31,000 in 2014 to $50,000 in 2015.

Surya also partners with Akshaya Patra to provide more than 7,300 underprivileged children in rural India with meals to help keep them in school, and works with Thrive Educate (formerly East Meets West) to sponsor 200 annual high school scholarships for Indian girls.
