FastFact: D.C.-Area Counties Lead Household Income

This week’s FastFact profiles counties based on their median household incomes.

In the U.S., there are only 99 counties whose median income cashes in at more than $75,000. Together, those make up only 3.2 percent of counties nationwide.

The second highest range, with incomes between $53,046 and $75,000, accounts for 17.4 percent of total counties. A combination of the next two income range groups--$40,000 to $53,046 and $30,000 to $40,00--comprises 75 percent of the country and includes 2,361 counties. On the other end of the spectrum, households earning a median income below $30,000 are equivalent to 4.3 percent.

In an examination of the five counties with the highest median incomes,  the top three are in Virginia and are members of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria market. Falls Church City, Va., has less than 5,000 households and a median incomes of $122,884. This is 132 percent higher than the U.S. median income ($53,046). The second and third counties with the highest median incomes are also located in the state of Virginia--Loudoun and Fairfax. Combined, the two counties have 492,647 households and median incomes greater than $100,000.

Howard County, Md., has the fourth highest median income of all U.S. counties. Howard is located in the Baltimore metropolitan statistical area. The fifth highest median income comes from Los Alamos, N.M., located in a micro statical area market with less than 8,000 households.

The U.S. median income range group is 47.3 percent of counties. Households in this group make between $40,000 and $53,046 annually.
