FastFact: 2 States Have Median Income of More than $70K

In 2012, the total U.S. median income was $53,046, and only two states — Maryland and New Jersey — posted median incomes greater than $70,000.
Nine states reported median household incomes between $60,000 and $70,000.
The combined two median ranges ($53,046 to $60,000 and $45,000 to $53,046) consist of 30 states and account for 58.8 percent of the total.
Maryland, New Jersey, Alaska, Connecticut and Hawaii have the highest median incomes. Maryland’s median income of $72,999 is 38 percent higher than the U.S. median income. New Jersey’s median income of $71,637 is 35 percent greater than the U.S. median.
Alaska and Connecticut are 31 percent higher than the national median income, and Hawaii’s median income is 27 percent greater than the national median.
