Hooker Furniture (NASDAQ: HOFT) reported net income of $2.3 million for the second quarter ended Aug. 3, a 34.6 percent increase over net income of $1.7 million in net income during the second quarter of last year.
Second-quarter net sales were $54.9 million, a decrease from $55.3 million reported in the second quarter of last year.
Net income for the first half of the year climbed to $5.1 million compared to $3.8 million during the first half of last year. Net sales for the first half were $116.3 million compared to net sales of $111.6 million in the first half of last year.
"Given the lackluster demand and sluggish retail conditions that characterized the summer months, we were pleased to deliver an approximate 35 percent net income increase on the strong performance of our case goods unit, a nearly $200,000 operating profit turnaround for our H Contract unit and sequential improvements in Sam Moore profitability," said Paul Toms, chairman and CEO.
