High Point Market Launches Public Art Project

The partnership includes the Southwest Renewal Foundation, the High Point Convention & Visitors Bureau, the High Point Rotary Club, the design group Opportunity High Point, the Theatre Art Galleries, High Point Bank, the High Point Arts Council and the City of High Point.
The first pilot art project will unfold in seven locations, including three in the Market district. The project initially will feature sculptures from local artist Charles B. “Chuck” Foster who works in granite, marble and bronze.
Seven corresponding outdoor stone sculptures will be placed in public and private spaces, made of marble, granite or limestone, and weighing between 3,000 and 5,000 pounds, standing six- to eight-feet tall. The project calls for the artwork to appear on a rotating basis for a period of seven months (September 2014 through April 2015), after which the sculptures will be replaced and feature additional artists.
“My objective is to share my work in public settings in High Point,” Foster said. “By doing so, my art will be viewed by an audience from around the world who come to High Point twice yearly for High Point Market.”
“I’m excited about the prospect of displaying the work of a local artist in our community, along with the prospect of other artists in the future," said Judy Mendenhall of the High Point City Council. "It’s also especially nice that the artwork will be seen and appreciated by visitors to High Point from all over the world twice yearly at High Point Market.”
In addition to the local community, these sculptures will be appreciated by a world-wide audience twice yearly during High Point Market. Approximately 75,000 people attend Market each year, of which approximately 10 percent are international visitors from over 100 different countries. Three of the seven sculpture locations are within the Market territory.
The unveiling of all the sculptures is planned for Saturday, Sept. 20 at the High Point Convention & Visitors Bureau/High Point Chamber of Commerce.
