DOC Plans to Exclude Murphy Beds from Duties

The U.S. Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration said last week that it has plans to remove Murphy beds from the scope of the 2005 antidumping order on wood bedroom furniture from China.
In March, Chinese manufacturer Techcraft had requested a changed circumstance review to revoke the order on Murphy beds. U.S. petitioners for the original antidumping investigation of Chinese bedroom furniture were in agreement, leading to DOC's preliminary ruling to exclude such beds from the order, thus excluding them from duties.
Following is from DOC's Federal Register notice of the preliminary ruling: "The products covered by this changed circumstances review are certain enclosable wall bed units, also referred to as Murphy beds, which are composed of the following three major sections: (1) A metal wall frame, which attaches to the wall and uses coils or pistons to support the metal mattress frame; (2) a metal frame, which has euro slats for supporting a mattress and two legs that pivot; and (3) wood panels, which attach to the metal wall frame and/or the metal mattress frame to form a cabinet to enclose the wall bed when not in use.
"Excluded enclosable wall bed units are imported in ready-to-assemble format with all parts necessary for assembly. Enclosable wall bed units do not include a mattress. Wood panels of enclosable wall bed units, when imported separately, remain subject to the order."
DOC is scheduled to issue the final results of this changed circumstances review by early February 2015. Click here to read the entire DOC Federal Register notice of this action.
