FastFacts: Furniture Consumers by Age

This week's FastFact examines the key purchasing age groups driving furniture sales and the shifts between the generations. 

Households with people between the ages of 35 and 44, (Generation X) which accounted for a large chunk of furniture sales in the late 1990s and in the beginning of the 2000s, are now on the lower end of the spectrum. The decline began in 2004, when Gen X dropped to the No. 2 spot, then again in 2011, dropping to third place. 

Purchasing groups within the furniture industry have been divided into four groups; ages 25-34, 35-44, 45-54 and 55-64. 

While, the Baby Boomers (ages 49-68) have historically driven furniture industry sales up to record highs, they are on their way out of the purchasing hot seat. Reports suggest that eventually Generation Y will rev up industry sales the same way the Baby Boomers did during that generation’s heyday. 

Today’s Gen Y is between ages 9 and 28, but as the generation ages, it will become a primary purchaser in the furniture industry.
