Furniture Orders Climb 3%

Furniture orders climbed 3 percent over last May, down from a 13 percent increase reported for April, according to Smith Leonard's monthly Furniture Insights.

The firm reports that the early timing of the April High Point Market combined with the late timing of the 2013 April High Point Market skewed the results.

Furniture Insights, the monthly report published by the accounting firm, goes onto say 53 percent of the participants reported increased orders for May over the same month last year, a significant drop from the 77 percent reporting increases last month.

Year-to-date, new orders remain 5 percent a had of the same period a year ago. About 60 percent of the Furniture Insights participants have reported increased orders on par with last month's report.

Shipments in May were 5 percent ahead of the same month last year and up 3 percent from April. About 61 percent of the participants reported increased shipments over May 2013, down from 85 percent last month.
