Darvin Furniture Sets Expansion

Darvin Furniture is spending $4 million to expand its Orland Park, Ill., store to more than 200,000 square feet, continuing the philosophy of the third-generation, family-owned business that it operates best under one big roof.

Darvin, which opened on 2 acres at 15400 La Grange Road in 1979 and has since grown its footprint to 13 acres, had sales growth of 5 percent to $83 million last year.

Co-owners and brothers Steve and Marty Darvin trace the business to the 1920s when their grandfather would go door-to-door in Chicago selling sundries and making commissions by taking customers to furniture wholesalers. In the 1940s, their grandfather and father opened the first Darvin Furniture store in the West Pullman neighborhood. They believe having management centralized in one location helps them control costs and maintain the customer service that has been a cornerstone of their success.
