AHFA Supplier Division Golf Tourney Gains Support

The Suppliers Division of the American Home Furnishings Alliance saw an increase in both sponsors and golfers participating in this month's Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament in Hickory, N.C.

The event funds the only scholarship program in the home furnishings industry that provides educational support for the children of industry workers. Since 1990, the program has awarded 76 scholarships.

With the cost of higher education rising every year, interest in the Supplier Division’s Scholarship Program has been growing. Twenty teams of golfers participated in this year’s tournament, held June 17 at Lake Hickory Country Club. This was up from 19 teams last year and 15 in 2012.

The number of 2014 applicants for the six $2,000 scholarships awarded each spring also was up 7 percent from last year.

The one-year scholarships are awarded to students based on financial need and academic merit. Applicants must be 21 years of age or under and enrolled in or planning to enroll in a four-year college or university, a junior or community college, or a vocational or technical school. Applicants must be the children of full-time employees of AHFA member companies.

The scholarship applications are due on Jan. 31 of each year, and the recipients are announced in April.

The first place team in this year’s Scholarship Golf Tournament included: Robert Lee, Jason Porter and Tim Moody, of HSM Solutions, and Brent Cook of Bernhardt. The second place team included Randy Howard, Mike Kriedler, Mark Jordan and Dan Dibble, of Bassett Furniture Inds. In third place was Julie Messner, Richard Krapfel, Todd Messner and Chad East, of International Market Centers.

Roy Calcagne of Craftmaster Furniture and Chris Ledford of Precedent were closest to the pin, and Lanny Jarrell Wright, of Thomasville, and Todd Messner, International Market Centers, had the longest drives.

AHFA extended special thanks to Platinum Tournament Sponsors HSM Solutions, Leggett & Platt and NCFI Polyurethanes; Gold Sponsors Wright Global Graphic Solutions, Harlee Packaging and Watkins & Shepard Trucking; and Silver Sponsors RPM Wood Finishes, OTR Fuel Consulting and Future Foam.
