City of Hope Bestows Amini with Honorary Degree

Michael Amini, chairman and CEO of Amini Innovation Corp., has been awarded an honorary doctorate degree at City of Hope’s 16th commencement ceremony of the Irell & Manella Graduate School of Biological Sciences.

A longtime supporter of City of Hope, Amini's contributions to the organization include establishing the Michael Amini Transfusion Medical Center. His gift made it possible to expand the institution’s blood/platelet collection and transfusion program, benefiting the institution’s cancer patients as well as its research programs.

”Michael’s contributions have had a significant impact both on City of Hope’s lifesaving care and on its ability to conduct leading-edge, transformative research,” said Sharon Joyce, City of Hope vice president of corporate philanthropy. “His support has enhanced our ability to quickly turn breakthrough discoveries into tangible benefits for patients here and around the world.”

On hand at the June 6 ceremony to deliver the keynote address to graduates was Nobel Laureate Thomas Cech, Ph.D.

Amini was joined on-stage by 12 students receiving their doctor of philosophy degrees in biological sciences. The furniture designer and philanthropist was presented with an honorary doctor of science degree by Robert Stone, City of Hope president and CEO.

During his acceptance speech, Amini commended the graduates on their pursuit of science and of new discoveries that will save lives and change the world.

Amini used his beginnings in the furniture business as an example of the importance of overcoming obstacles, recalling that he started his company 26 years ago with a mere $7,000.

“My determination was always greater than any disappointment I encountered,” Amini said. “My persistence became the fuel that powered my desire to succeed, and there were no obstacles that I would permit to block or discourage my ambition.”

Amini said he was truly humbled to wear a graduate’s cap and gown and to receive such a distinguished honor from an organization that he respects.

“City of Hope is an extraordinary place, with extraordinary researchers and physicians,” Amini said. “I’m proud of the work done here and of the past and future accomplishments of these graduates. They will help create a brighter future for us all.”
