Piedmont Furniture Club Sets 28th Annual Golf Tourney

The Piedmont Furniture Club will hold its 28th annual golf tournament Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the High Point Country Club--Willow Creek in High Point.

The Piedmont Club is associated with the Virginia/Carolinas HFRA chapter of the International Home Furnishings Representatives Association, and provides industry reps with local networking, services and events throughout the year.

This year’s tournament will continue its tradition and make a memorial donation to the Brenner Children’s Hospital Pediatric Oncology Research Division. The donation will be made in honor of past tournament honorees for their strength and courage before losing their battle with cancer.

Honorees are Jeff Murrow, Fred Murrow, Christine O’Connor DesVergers and Harold Hart.

Fred and Jeff Murrow were big supporters of IHFRA and its chapters. Jeff participated regularly in the Piedmont Furniture Club events and social activities. Fred and Jeff Murrow both battled cancer for many years.  They were the first tournament honorees in 2011 and chose Brenner Children’s Hospital for the proceeds to be given. The Piedmont Furniture Club decided to keep Brenner as the tournament’s beneficiary to aid cancer research for years to come.

Christine O’Connor DesVergers, daughter of Madeline and Kevin O’Connor of Samson Marketing, was the Piedmont Furniture Club’s 2012 tournament honoree. Christine was 31 and the mother of two young children when she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. In 2004, “Team Christine” was created to raise money for the Komen Foundation’s Race for the Cure. With 100-plus members, they raised more than $160,000. She was only 38 when she passed away in 2011.

Harold Hart was diagnosed with leukemia in Dec. 2012 at age 70. He was the Piedmont Furniture Club’s 2013 tournament honoree, just a few months before his passing. Aside from his diagnosis, Harold was an avid N.C. State fan, formerly holding a seat on the PNC Arena board. Harold also was on the board of the Siler City Hospital.
