Room & Board Opens 1st New England Store

Home furnishings retailer Room & Board opened its 14th store and its first New England store Monday in Boston.
Room & Board, a Minnesota-based furniture chain which specializes in what it describes as modern American-made furniture, will open its first New England store today on Boston’s Newbury Street.
The 39,000-square-foot building, which is owned by Kensington Investment Co., is located at 407 Newbury Street. at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue. Room & Board has leased the entire four-story building. It's Room & Board's 14th location in the U.S.
John Gabbert, the company’s founder and CEO, said he was looking for a year to find space in downtown Boston, but high rental fees posed a challenge. He said he couldn’t recall how much his rent is in the new space, but said it would have been too expensive to lease the former Best Buy location, across the street on Newbury Street that has been vacant since 2012.
“We can’t pay typical retail rents because we have such a large space,” Gabbert said.
