High Point Market Historical Marker to be Unveiled Monday

North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory plans to visit High Point Monday afternoon for the unveiling of the first North Carolina Highway Historical Marker relating to the High Point Furniture Market.
The marker will be placed on South Main Street alongside the historical Furniture exposition hall building that was built in 1921. The unveiling and dedication will begin at 2 p.m.
Established in 1909, the High Point Market is a key industry for North Carolina, with an annual economic impact of $5.4 billion, according to a 2013 Duke University study. The first building built for Market exhibition is a 10-story edifice, designed by architect William P. Rose, which opened on June 20, 1921, at a cost of $1 million dollars. No outside capital was involved in the construction. That building offered 249,000 square feet of space. Today the market boasts more than 11.5 million square feet of show space.
Governor McCrory will be joined by: N.C. Department of Cultural Resources Secretary Susan W. Kluttz; Office of Archives & History Research Branch Supervisor Michael Hill; High Point Market Authority Chairman of the Board and Vaughan-Bassett Furniture President Doug Bassett; Tom Conley, president and CEO, High Point Market Authority; and Tammy Nagem, COO, High Point Market Authority.
