U.S. retail sales climbed an adjusted 0.3 percent last month for the first time in three months, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.
Pent-up demand from a harsh winter was unleashed as some areas of the country started to thaw.
Retail sales account for about a third of consumer spending. The economy grows faster when consumers spend more.
February sales climbed at furniture stores, department stores, auto dealers, Internet retailers, clothing and sporting goods stores.
