Home furnishings retailer Ikea has been awarded the 2013 Go Green Award from the Plymouth Township Council for its Conshohocken location.
The award is given annually to an organization in Plymouth Township that shows a commitment to protecting the environment.
“Ikea Conshohocken is honored to be recognized by the Plymouth Township Council for our sustainability initiatives and are pleased to be viewed as a leader in the community for our positive social and environmental actions,” said Camilla Meiby, Ikea Conshohocken’s store manager. “We are also proud of our extensive range of products that help our customers live a more sustainable life at home.”
In July 2012, as part of an Ikea initiative to roll-out solar panels on nearly 90 percent of its U.S. locations, 4,760 solar panels were installed on top of the Conshohocken location's roof, which produces approximately 1,366,310 kWh of clean electricity annually. This is equivalent of reducing 942 tons of carbon dioxide, eliminating emissions of 185 cars or powering 117 homes annually. Consistent with the company’s goal of being energy independent by 2020, IKEA has installed more than 250,000 solar panels worldwide and owns approximately 110 wind turbines in Europe. Globally, Ikea has allocated $1.8 billion to invest in renewable energy through 2015.
