Preliminary estimates of Bedding growth in the third quarter of this year indicate sales have rebounded somewhat from the poor second quarter that saw declining imports and instability at retail. Sales estimates of $4.5 billion in 2019 Q3 put growth at 3% over to the same quarter last year. Unsettled trade wars further contribute to industry uncertainty.
Bedding sales have struggled the last couple of years with slow growth again in 2019. However, initial estimates indicate the second quarter of this year grew 3% over the same quarter 3 in 2018.
2019 Bedding sales year-to-date totaled $4.5 billion, up 0.1% over the same three quarters last year.

Bedding sales in the second quarter of this year were impacted by a considerable slowing of imports. 2019 Q2 sales increased 1.6% growth compared to the same quarter last year. Sales of $3.71 billion were also down 9.7% versus 2019 Q1.
Bedding sales have struggled the last 9 quarters, and growth continues to be slow quarter over quarter. This comes in the midst of a general slowing of total furniture industry. The second quarter of this year grew 1.6% over the same quarter 2 in 2018.
2019 Bedding sales for the first half of the year totaled $7.82 billion, up 2.4% over the first half of last year.

After a rocky 2018 for the Bedding industry that saw consolidation, increased internet presence and an onslaught of imports, the year ended with growth up less than 1 percent (0.8 percent). Initial first quarter estimates of $4.05 billion put 2019 Q1 sales up 1.5 percent over 2018 Q1. Compared to the previous fourth quarter of 2018, sales rebounded 15.6 percent reflecting both Bedding’s seasonality and hopefully a righting of the ship.
Bedding has struggled the last 8 quarters, and growth continues to be slow quarter over quarter. The first quarter of this year grew 1.5 percent over the same quarter 1 in 2018.
First quarter 2018 Bedding sales totaled $4.05 billion, up 1.5 percent over the same period last year.

Combined Furniture and Bedding sales grew only 1.8 percent in the first quarter versus the same quarter in 2018. Compared to the previous quarter, 2018 Q4, first quarter sales were down 3.2 percent totaling $25.92 billion.
Furniture (excluding Bedding) in the first quarter increased 1.86 percent versus the same quarter 1 in 2018 totaling $21.88 billion. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2018, Furniture sales fell 6 percent.
Although Furniture sales typically dip in the first quarter compared to the fourth quarter of the previous year, Bedding sales tend to increase. After a poor fourth quarter last year, Bedding sales were up 15.6 percent over 2018 Q4, totaling $4.05 billion. Compared to the same quarter last year, 2019 Q1 sales increased only 1.5 percent.

In 2018 the Bedding industry continued struggle amidst consolidation and an increased internet presence. Initial fourth quarter estimates of $3.60 billion put 2018 Q4 sales up 2 percent over 2017 Q4. Compared to the previous third quarter of 2018, sales are down 12.9 percent reflecting Bedding’s seasonality. Preliminary year end sales total $15.51 billion up 2.6 percent over 2017.
Last year Bedding’s quarterly to quarter growth over the previous year continued to be modest. The fourth quarter remains Bedding’s historically lowest volume quarter, totaling $3.6 billion 2018 Q4, up 2 percent from 2017.
Year end Bedding sales are still under review, but preliminary results show 2018 sales of $15.51 billion, a 2.6 percent increase over 2017.

Industry experts are still trying to get a handle on the impact of the closing of Mattress Firm stores as well as the ongoing Bedding sales through eCommerce. Preliminary data puts third quarter 2018 retail bedding sales at $4.14 billion up 3.5 percent over the same Q3 of 2017. Compared to the previous second quarter of this year, third quarter sales are up 10.2 percent signaling Bedding’s cyclical third quarter rise in sales.
Preliminary 2018 Q3 data points to continued slower Bedding growth compared to other major furniture products. Sales of $4.14 billion are 3.5 percent greater than 2017 Q3 and 10.2 percent higher than 2018 Q2.
For the first three quarters of 2018, Bedding sales totaled $11.9 billion, up 2.7 percent over the first three quarters of last year.

The Bedding industry is still feeling the effects of a shell-shocked 2017 due to Industry consolidation and an increased internet presence among other things. Preliminary data puts second quarter 2018 retail bedding sales at $3.81 billion up 3.5 percent over the same Q2 of 2017. Compared to the previous first quarter of this year, second quarter sales are down 5.1 percent due in part to Bedding’s seasonality.
Preliminary 2018 Q2 data points to continued slower Bedding growth. Sales of $3.81 billion are 3.5 percent greater than 2017 Q2 but 5.1 percent less than 2018 Q1.
For the first half of 2018, Bedding sales totaled $7.83 billion, up 3.1 percent over the first two quarters of last year.

After a strong fourth quarter, combined furniture and bedding sales took their typical cyclical dip compared to the fourth quarter of 2017, but maintained decent growth compared to the same quarter 1 of last year. Industry sales totaled $26.66 billion in for the first three months of 2018, up 4.5 percent compared to the same quarter last year, but down 2 percent from 2017 Q4.
Furniture (excluding Bedding) in the first quarter increased 4.8 percent versus the same quarter 1 in 2017 totaling $22.76 billion. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2017, furniture sales fell 3.6 percent.
Although furniture sales typically dip in the first quarter, bedding sales tend to increase compared to the last quarter of the previous year. Industry sales for Bedding are preliminary for the quarter as data is mixed, but initial estimates of $3.9 billion put 2018 Q1 sales up 9.0 percent over 2017 Q4. Compared to the previous same quarter 1 of last year, sales are up 2.8 percent.
