Consumer spending was flat in May, the weakest reading since June 2010, the Commerce Department reported Monday. Personal income rose 0.3 percent. Wall Street economists had expected a 0.3 percent increase in incomes and a 0.1 percent gain in spending. The savings rate rose to 5.0 percent from 4.9 percent in April. Excluding inflation, disposable incomes rose 0.1 in May after falling 0.1 percent in April. Spending adjusted-for-inflation fell 0.1 percent for the second straight month. The personal consumption expenditure price index rose 0.2 percent in May and is up 2.5 percent in the past year.

The Restoration Hardware store on the Third Street Promenade closed its doors Thursday. The stores closure came as a surprise to employees, who learned about the move just days before it happened, said a worker who wished to remain anonymous. We dont know wants going to happen to [the employees]. . . . It's still up in the air, she said the day before the closure. The furniture chain is shutting a number of its mall locations in an effort to rebrand itself as a luxury retailer, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Pierre Deux, a French-inspired home furnishings store on King Street, closed its doors last week. Gail Griffen, former manager of the downtown store, said in a news release announcing the closure that employees were told Thursday morning to pack their personal belongings and exit the building, locking the door behind them. Employees of the downtown store declined to comment on the closing.
