Levin Furniture Opens Ohio Store; Donates $10K

During the festivities, the company presented a $10,000 check to the furniture bank, which provides high-quality used furniture to families that are rebuilding their lives. Rent-A-Center Sued over Alleged Bedbugs

The lawsuit filed Tuesday in Dayton said the roommates became infested with bedbugs after renting a couch, loveseat, lamps and tables from a Rent-A-Center. The lawsuit said they immediately developed red bumps from bug bites after moving the furniture into their home in February. The Dayton Daily News reports that the lawsuit alleges the Rent-A-Center was negligent and caused emotional distress. It said the roommates had to hire an exterminator and get rid of possessions. Landfair Furniture to Close

By Home Furnishings Business in on July 8, 2011 Portland, Ore.-based Landfair Furniture + Design Gallery will close at the end of next month.

In an e-mail announcement, owners Bev Landfair and Mike Landfair said the "economy finally got us!" The couple who started the business 10 years ago, said they had done everything they could think of to remain in business.

"We put all our resources into the showroom and have no more to give," they wrote.

A liquidation sale of floor samples is underway, and the Landfairs said they have paid vendors in full for special orders, and all of those orders will be filled.

"I've loved every minute of the 10 years that we have been in business," Mike said. "You have energized me. Thank you for that. It saddens me that I can't continue to do what I love."

Cost Plus Names New Non-Exec Chairman

By Home Furnishings Business in Executive Changes on July 8, 2011 Cost Plus, Inc. (NASDAQ: CPWM) has named Kenneth T. Stevens to succeed Joseph H. Coulombe as non-executive chairman.

In March 2005, the retailer's board instituted a process under which the office of the non-executive chairman would rotate amongst its members.

"On behalf of the entire board, we would like to thank Joe for his excellent service as the non-executive chairman during a pivotal year in which the company successfully completed its turnaround and returned to profitability," said Barry Feld, president and CEO. "We are pleased that Joe will remain on the board and continue to provide his insight and guidance."

Stevens joined the board of directors in 2008. He held executive positions at philosophy, Inc., a skin care and beauty company; Tween Brands, Inc., a publicly traded retailer; and Limited Brands, Inc. Prior to 2002, Stevens held senior leadership positions at several public and private companies.

"As the former chief executive oficer of a cosmetics company, Ken has first hand experience with the challenges that retailers face," Feld said. "In addition, his extensive executive management experience and his board service with both public and private companies provides the leadership, business judgment and consensus building skills necessary to effectively lead our board of directors as non-executive chairman."

Cost Plus operates 259 stores in 30 states.

Surya, Hearst Expand Country Living Collection

The addition, The Happy Cottage collection, will debut at the Atlanta International Area Rug Market next week. The collection includes 18 dhurrie rugs constructed of 100 percent wool.

"Our expanded rug collection offers the perfect range of designs to serve today's personalized approach to decorating," said Glen Ellen Brown, vice president of Hearst Brand Development. "The enhanced color palette offers a fresh update on the classic country style that our readers know and love."

Satya Tiwari, president of Surya, is confident  the company's retailers are going to love the collection.
