Globe Express Opens 3 New Locations

By Home Furnishings Business in Delivery on August 31, 2011

Worldwide logistics provider Globe Express Services has opened three new corporate locations in Miami, Fla.; and Guangzhou and Suzhou, China.

These openings mark the first step in an integrated plan to expand the company's corporate office network from 42 to 50 by the end of 2011, in order to have the right people in the right places to support its ambitious future growth. Charlotte, N.C.-based GES delivers customized logistics solutions to a diverse global client base doing business in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, the Americas and around the world.

Located in a 110,000-square-foot, multifunctional site, GES Miami will serve as a gateway facility for Latin American trade.

"By setting up shop in Miami, we provide that direct service link between Latin America, the Caribbean and the rest of the countries we already serve," said Tony Bikhazi, president-the Americas.

"GES Miami offers a wide variety of multimodal, project-type and value-added logistics services, including inventory management and distribution, all within a scalable, multi-functional, bonded facility with close proximity to all local air and sea ports," added Vice President Sales & Development for Florida, Latin America & the Caribbean Richard Palma. "This will allow us to strengthen our focus on the Latin American region, especially in key markets such as Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Panama and Peru."

Globe Express also is expanding its China platform with new offices in Guangzhou and Suzhou, bringing its total number of in-country corporate locations to 10.

"In line with the company's global expansion strategy, we have added a Guangzhou office to strengthen our network in southern China, and a Suzhou office to further develop our coverage in various industries, such as high-tech, automotive, textiles, chemicals and pharmaceuticals," said President of Asia Pacific & Indian Subcontinent Georges Mejaes. "We are also providing logistics services for key chemical companies, and working to build our dangerous goods distribution network in China. This is an exciting time of growth for our company, and China is of significant strategic importance to us."

By Home Furnishings Business in Community/Charitable Support on August 31, 2011 Columbus, Ohio-based Value City Furniture has partnered with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to furnishing the St. Jude Home of Dreams, part of a fundraising effort by the hospital.

Value City will furnish the four bedroom, 2.5 bath, 2,700-square-foot home and provide a second prize of a Value City $5,000 gift card.

€œWe have a rich tradition of supporting the communities we serve,€ said Robert Grimmett, American Signature director of visual merchandise. €œIt was only fitting to outfit the St. Jude Home of Dreams to benefit the St. Jude Children€™s Research Hospital.€

Located in Dublin, Ohio, the St. Jude Home of Dreams was built by Fischer Homes  and is valued at $400,000. Tickets for a chance to win the home are available for $100 each with only 7,000 tickets are available for purchase. All proceeds benefit the efforts at St. Jude.

The house is open for tours now through Sept. 25; Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Winners of both the home and the Value City gift card, among other prizes, will be announced Sunday, Oct. 2 starting at 1 p.m.

In addition to outfitting the home for the duration of the open houses, Value City is hosting an open house weekend on Sept. 10 and 11 with room giveaways, product experts and designer tips available to mirror the Home€™s style in the consumer€™s own home. The master bedroom, a youth bedroom, living room and dining room will all be available for tour guests to win as part of the Value City Weekend.

€œWe are extremely proud of our new lines and are excited to introduce them to the public,€ Grimmett said. €œThe unique opportunity to fully display a new collection in a beautiful home setting will show consumers the quality and distinct look our products bring to a home. From the new contemporary lines and colors used in the living and master sitting areas, to the Varsity youth collection trundle bed with storage, we have a lot to share.€

The home includes an open floor plan, complete with first floor office space and a great room connecting the kitchen and living areas.

€œBecause of the floor plan, we€™re able to mix woods, textures and patterns breaking down traditional consumer mindsets that whole spaces need to match,€ Grimmett said. €œOur partnership with Kentucky based Touch Of Class to coordinate the furniture selections, custom draperies and final touches puts the best look forward for this beautiful home benefiting the great causes of St. Jude.€

Beatrous Joins Groovystuff

By Home Furnishings Business in Executive Changes on August 31, 2011

Lee Beatrous has joined reclaimed teak furniture vendor Groovystuff as manager of product design.

In addition, Beatrous will help facilitate the company's interaction with universities now participating in its student design competition, Groovystuff Design Challenge.

Beatrous, a graduate in industrial design from Appalachian State University, himself was the first-place popular vote winner of the Design Challenge in fall 2010. As a full-time staff member, he will manage the Groovystuff Design Challenge program, interfacing with the participating students and their schools to help move viable products more quickly from the prototype stage into production.

Beatrous completed a six-week internship with Groovystuff prior to graduation in May of 2011, after which Groovystuff President Chris Bruning hired him as manager of product design.

"Lee was the first person I had ever hired as an intern," Bruning said. "The venture was extremely effective and productive for our company. He was able to improve operational efficiencies within the company."

Beatrous the internship matched his goals for full-time employment.

"I think the decision of where an internship should be should be based on what you want to accomplish (in your career) ... not (on) just one specific aspect" that goes into a job," he said.

Bruning said Beatrous' experience with the Design Challenge helped form a foundation of product knowledge that put him a unique position to bring value to the Groovystuff team.

"His interaction with customers and industry professionals at market gave him the experience and knowledge he needs to guide other students who have the talent to bring products to market," Bruning said.

Groovystuff is nearing the completion of its second Design Challenge competition, which included designs from 16 Auburn University students. Their products were displayed at the April High Point Furniture Market. The company is currently producing the most popular designs from the original 16 in preparation for the October High Point Market. The design receiving the most orders at the fall market will be declared the grand prize winner, and that student designer will receive a $1,000 cash prize and permanent royalties on all future sales of their design.
