NHFA or WHFA Membership for Life

By Home Furnishings Business in Furniture Retailing on January 11, 2012

The National Home Furnishings and Western Home Furnishings associations are raffling off one lifetime membership to the Association at Las Vegas Furniture Market.

At the Jan. 31-Feb. 3 show, every retailer that joins during Market week will be entered to win a membership for life. The contest, sponsored by Emerald Home Furnishings(http://www.emeraldhome.com/) also will offer new members $100 in free warehouse products just for joining.

"We are excited to offer retailers the opportunity to win a lifetime membership to the Association," said WHFA Executive Director Sharron Bradley. "One lucky winner will have access to our money saving programs, top-notch education and expansive retailer network, for the life of their business."

Emerald Home Furnishings sponsorship of the lifetime membership raffle coincides with the vendor's 50th Anniversary.

"We are turning 50 years old this year. There are very few companies that are privately held and have been in business for 50 years, and we are proud to be one of them. We feel it's a milestone, and we want to help retailers achieve this milestone as well," said David Beckmann, president of Emerald Home Furnishings. "I feel that a strong industry association makes for stronger retailers and a stronger industry. The knowledge and information that comes from the Association not only helps a retailer be savvier in their business but also gives them tools to grow their businesses. That is the value behind the National and Western Home Furnishings Associations."

To be entered in to the Membership for Life raffle, retailers must visit the Retailer Resource Center in WMC-C496 and join the Association prior to Friday, Feb. 3. The winner will be chosen at noon on Feb. 3. Retailers need not be present to win.

American West Takes over Worldwide's Calif. Ops

By Home Furnishings Business in Delivery on January 11, 2012

Furniture transport specialist American West has assumed control of all Worldwide Logistics services, equipment and facilities in California.

According to the family owned concern, repurchased four months ago by its founder Josh Brown, the move makes American West, Los Osos, Calif., the largest furniture carrier in the state.

As part of the latest move, American West will exclusively service all of Worldwide Logistics' customers in the state of California for outbound shipping from California to all states across the country. American West also has entered into an agreement to service Worldwide Logistics' East Coast customers shipping into California. Under the terms of the agreement, Worldwide Logistics will continue to act as a pick-up agent for American West, while American West will provide line-haul and all distribution within California using its own trucks and terminals. Customers will be billed directly by American West.

American West also is now servicing all of Worldwide Logistics' pool distribution customers into the State of California, including major furniture and office furniture manufacturers. The company previously entered into a service agreement with Worldwide Logistics to service all pool distribution and 3PL customers in the state of Texas when Worldwide Logistics closed its Dallas facility last Fall.

American West has moved all of Worldwide Logistics' Riverside, Calif.-based operations to the 285,000-square-foot American West facility in Ontario, Calif.

"We are pleased to report that we have hired many of the employees from the Riverside facility, both as drivers and in key management positions," said American West Founder and CEO Josh Brown. "Additionally, we have purchased Worldwide Logistics equipment from the six companies that were merged into Worldwide Logistics four years ago, including tractors and trailers from Four Truckers, Rudisell Transportation and KKW among others.

"Unfortunately, we expect the current economic environment to continue adversely impacting the transportation industry as a whole, and we expect the contraction of the quality carrier base to continue. That said, we repurchased American West for cash, we carry no debt, and thanks to more than 20 years of experience in the business, we have grown the company into the largest furniture carrier in the State. We look forward to continuing to enhance and expand our services to the furniture industry as we move ahead, and to capitalizing on additional opportunities for growth as they arise."

Norfolk, Va.-based Haynes Furniture has upgraded its technology to Storis's Vision product suite.

The retailer, which has been in business since 1930, has 15 locations.

"In 1994, we became fully integrated and benefited from the STORIS retail solution," said E.J. Strelitz, CEO of Haynes Furniture and The Dump. "Now, 17 years later, every facet of our unique business model works together with the Vision application. Since the implementation of the Vision platform, we expanded with store openings in two new markets and one warehouse. This growth reinforces Storis€™ role in providing our company with the foundation for expansion. Our operations have been continuously optimized alongside this robust product suite.€

Strelitz said the conversion to the Vision platform was seamless.

"The flexible functionality provides us with opportunities to process more sales in the same amount of time using tools such as Storis' mobile technology," he said. "Additionally, we have significantly improved audit trails and accountability of our inventory and transactions."
