Buffett Cracks Wise on CBS Interview

By Home Furnishings Business in on February 9, 2012 Billionaire businessman Warren Buffett, owner of Berkshire Hathaway, helped CBS  kick off its remake of "Person to Person" Wednesday night with a bit of wit and humor.

Buffett came to the video interview with his A game and tossed out humorous bits about jewelry, candy and even actor George Clooney, who was also interviewed for the premier of the show.

Singapore Furniture Show Looks toward Big Turnout

By Home Furnishings Business in on February 9, 2012 The International Furniture Fair Singapore 2012/29th ASEAN Furniture Show (IFFS/AFS 2012), Deco Asia 2012 and The Hospitality Show 2012, each kick off March 9, and to date, nearly 4,800 visitors have registered to attend, marking a 10 percent increase compared to the previous shows.

The markets run March 9-12.

IFFS/AFS will be welcoming buying delegations that hail from 29 different countries at the upcoming edition.

The Hospitality.Design.Furniture Converge Asia conference will be held during the show to provide attendees the opportunity to network and share ideas. The conference has about 30 international speakers, including leading hoteliers, architects, interior designers and buyers.

€œWe€™ve invited high-flyers of the architecture, design and hospitality industries to share their success stories, rich experience and views,€ said Clement Ng, business development director of IFFS Pte Ltd. €œThe congregation of minds and networking opportunities provided, together with the trade show trio, completes the loop. The conference complements the exhibition perfectly.€

Co-located with IFFS/AFS are two other furniture and furnishings shows, Deco Asia 2012 and The Hospitality Show 2012.

Deco Asia gives center stage to home furniture and interior design, featuring the latest designs for soft furnishings and home decorative items. Buyers will find collections from Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC), HOBO By GDR (Indonesia), Indigo (Hong Kong), International Trade Imports (Australia) and Sharda Exports (India) at this year€™s event.

The International Furniture Fair Singapore 2012/29th ASEAN Furniture Show, Deco Asia  2012 and The Hospitality Show 2012 spans 70,000 square meters of exhibition space and attracts visitors from all over the world.

The Foundary Kicks off Designer Search

By Home Furnishings Business in on February 8, 2012 Online flash sale retailer The Foundary kicks off its second annual month-long designer search contest today with a social media presence on Facebook.

Foundary members will vote among the top design finalists to determine who will be featured and sold on the company's Web site.

In order to submit an application, contestants must first become a fan of The Foundary by liking its Facebook page. The deadline for submissions is March 7. On April 2, The Foundary will announce finalists and voting will begin on The Foundary.

Foundary Members will be able to vote for their favorite designer through April 20, and the winner will be announced on April 23.

"We believe the designer search contest provides a necessary platform for emerging designers. It gives deserving participants the opportunity to showcase their work," said Rob Anderson, general manager of The Foundary. "We're hunting for fresh talent to complement The Foundary's limited-time sales events."

The second Designer Search contest reinforces The Foundary's commitment to emerging designers. This year, the retailer anticipates a blend of new talent to enhance its daily selections and to establish themselves as an industry leader in home décor and furnishings.

All applicants must be at least 18 years old, and a legal resident of the U.S. or able to obtain the necessary visa or waiver.

The Foundary was started in 2010 by Hayneedle, an online home furnishings and lifestyle products retailer, to further its vision of connecting people with home and lifestyle products.

Longtime Furniture Executive Clark Hatcher Jr. Dies

Former Drexel Heritage Home Furnishings and Masco executive Clark Hatcher Jr. died at his Mt. Airy, N.C., home on Friday. He was 81.

After serving as an officer in the U.S. Air Force elite Black Sheep Squadron in Korea and Japan. In 1952, he graduated from North Carolina State University School of Furniture Manufacturing & Management.

His 43-year career in the furniture industry included executive posts with Mt. Airy Chair Co., Guardsman Chemical Coatings and Drexel Heritage Home Furnishings. Hatcher retired from Masco Corp. in 1995.

Hatcher was an avid reader, historian, world traveler and generous individual. He was very involved with his passions and community organizations. As a member of First United Methodist Church, he served on various mission trips to third-world countries, and served as Chairman of the Finance, Trustee, Building Campaign Committees, and Administrative Boards.

Recently, he was named as a N.C. State University Distinguished Alumni, serving on the Park Scholarship Selection Committee, and was a Lifetime Wolfpack Club and Alumni Association member.

Hatcher was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Nancy Gordon Hatcher. He is survived by his wife, Katherine B. Parries of Mt. Airy; sons N.C. "Trey" Hatcher III, David Hatcher, Philip Hatcher of Wilmington, and Bruce Hatcher of Raleigh; nine grandchildren; stepson, John Parries Jr., and step-granddaughter, Sara Grace Parries; stepdaughters, Katherine Cornelia Parries and Lisa Parries Shaw of Mount Airy; sisters, Harriet Hatcher Shore and Rebecca Hatcher Kurtz; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A Memorial service is being held today at 11 a.m.at First United Methodist Church in Morganton.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church Capital Maintenance Fund, 200 N. King St., Morganton, N.C. 28655; or to a charity of one's choice. Condolences may be made online here.

Gus Modern's "Keep on Giving" Gathers 2,100-Plus Pounds of Food

Modern home furnishings manufacturer Gus Design and retail partners in its "Keep On Giving!" promotion collected more than 2,100 pounds of food for local food banks.

During the month-long event in January, consumers that brought three non-perishable food items into a participating Gus retailer received 15 percent MSRP on Toronto-based Gus Modern's upholstery, dining, storage, lighting, and accessories. Collected food was distributed by the participating retailers to local food banks in their respective communities.
 
"The Gus Keep On Giving Event was a huge success for our store and for our community," said Sean Colohan, manager of Gus retailer Stylegarage in Vancouver, British Columbia. "Hunger is a year-round issue, and so we were excited to work with Gus to collect donations at a time of year when food banks need the support. Our customers were glad to know that their contributions would help those in need in the local community."
