Cindy Crawford to Pitch Art Van Mattress Line

Art Van Furniture hopes to smarten its image by signing supermodel Cindy Crawford as the face of its Pure Sleep mattress line, the Warren-based retailer said.

Art Van has a longstanding business relationship with the supermodel. Crawford has sold her line of living room furniture, Cindy Crawford Home, in Art Van stores for more than a decade, and she has been the guest of honor at Art Van events.

Crawford is an ideal spokeswoman for Pure Sleep because she has promoted a good night's sleep as the path to wellness and beauty, Art Van President Kim Yost said Monday.

Retail Sales Rise 0.4% in January

U.S. retail sales rose less than expected in January as consumers cut back on car purchases and did less online shopping.

Total retail sales increased 0.4 percent after being flat in December, the Commerce Department said today. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast retail sales climbing 0.7 percent last month.

The government had initially estimated that sales rose 0.1 percent in December, and on Tuesday it also revised downward its reading for retail sales in November. The revisions suggest consumers did not spend as much as previously thought during the holiday shopping season.

Are Old-Fashioned Furniture Stores an Endangered Species?

Up until a few years ago, Richland Center was home to three family-owned furniture stores. Now, there is just one. In Cross Plains, Feiner Home Furnishings will be out of business by May, and Achenbach Furniture and Floor Covering in Boscobel closed in 2011.

Blanchardville at one time had a furniture store, as did Montfort, Dodgeville, Cuba City, Cambridge and Jefferson. But despite a struggling economy and the growth of big-box stores in larger cities, some independent furniture stores remain viable and often are the centerpiece of a community's downtown business district.
