The round, white, paper light shades sold at Ikea for $5 are a familiar item in contemporary interior design. But these inexpensive lanterns are knockoffs of light sculptures created by the renowned artist Isamu Noguchi in the early 1950s.
The Noguchi lamps - called akari, the Japanese word for light - were inspired by traditional Japanese lanterns used in ancestor worship. Over the decades, the akari became classics of mid-20th century modern home decor.

Two seniors from Cornell University have become the first undergraduates to contribute to an interior design project that gives designers and architects a common language for interior design features.
Their "unroom" - spaces in homes and commercial buildings that have no furniture but attract people - will become the 86th entry in the Intypes (Interior Archetypes) Research and Teaching Project, a typology of contemporary interior design practices used throughout history and across cultures that was developed by College of Human Ecology researchers.

Finding a way to pump revenue into one city department that is perennially in the red was on the minds of City Council members Tuesday.
During a budget review session, council discussed the finances of the High Point Theatre. It's projected to cost the city $1.2 million in personnel (six full-time and three part-time positions) and operating expenses to run the theater for the budget year that begins July 1.

Home furnishings retailer Williams-Sonoma has signed a deal with pringting company R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co. to print the company's consumer catalogs.
Chicago-based R.R. Donnelley said the deal is a multi-million dollar agreement, but it did not give specific financial terms.
Wiliams-Sonoma, based in San Francisco, specializes in housewares and home furnishings. It owns Pottery Barn, West Elm and its namesake stores.

Umberto Bedini has rejoined Natuzzi (NYSE: NTZ) as chief operations officer for the company after a two-and-a-half year hiatus.
Bedini will be in charge of integrating worldwide the whole manufacturing and supply-chain processes by simplifying the organizational structures, reducing the complexity, focusing on a lean enterprise approach. The company said the changes will allow it to re-engineer its products and redefine the product development process to speed up time to market.
Bedini previously held positions within a number of large international groups, including Gruppo Farmaceutico Angelini, Rockwell Rimoldi, Indesit and Candy Group. Since 2004, he has been partner and CEO of ECA Consulting, an Italian management consultancies in the field of operations.
"We are pleased that Umberto decided to cooperate with us again and make his long lasting experience, gained in international and complex environments, available to our important challenges," said Pasquale Natuzzi, chairman and CEO of the Natuzzi Group. "His contribution will be important in achieving the objectives we have set for ourselves."
