Art Van to See How High Mattresses Can Go

By Home Furnishings Business in Bedding on August 3, 2012

Retailer Art Van Furniture is trying to break a Guinness World Record today by creating the tallest stack of mattresses.

The current record-a stack measuring 13 feet, 6 inches-was set by Mattress Firm in October at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. At that time, 12 Stearns & Foster mattresses were stacked to achieve the record.

Art Van will attempt to break the record using King Koil mattresses and stacking them 14 feet, six inches high.

BrandSource Expands LG Alliance

By Home Furnishings Business in Business Strategy on August 3, 2012

Buying group BrandSource has expanded its alliance with LG Electronics USA to offer members a full assortment of LG home appliance products, including refrigerators, dishwashers, laundry and cooking products.

Members of BrandSource will be able to leverage LG's broad appliance line-up and take advantage of in-store displays. Distribution and logistics will be handled by the BrandSource distribution centers.

The LG appliance distribution agreement builds on a six-year  relationship under which LG home entertainment products have been available to BrandSource members. Adding LG appliances to the roster allows members to offer customers a full assortment of LG-branded products.

"Our goal is always to support our members and help them be more successful," said Bob Lawrence, BrandSource CEO. "And LG appliances, among the highest-rated and most desirable in the U.S. market, are a great fit for our group. The strength of the LG brand and their terrific product lineup will help independent regional dealers draw more consumers into their stores."

Members attending the BrandSource national convention later this month in Las Vegas will be able to experience the new lineup at the LG Appliances product showcase. To help generate customer awareness, LG Appliances will also be highlighted at BrandSource.com and on the BrandSource mobile app.

"We're enthusiastic about expanding our relationship with BrandSource to bring LG's innovative and stylish line of premium appliances to the BrandSource members," said John Riddle, vice president of home appliance regional sales, LG Electronics USA. "Many members already carry LG home entertainment products, and adding major appliances is a natural connection to leverage the strength of LG in BrandSource retail stores."

BrandSource has about 4,500 independent dealer members in North America and close to 3,000 branded stores in the U.S.

Last week's news that Vornado Realty Trust landed Google as a tenant for the Chicago Merchandise Mart, one of the city's largest office buildings, was viewed by many as a big win for downtown Chicago. But to real-estate industry executives, the deal is also a coup that may help Vornado speed up its exit from the furniture-mart business.

Since late last year, Vornado, based in New York and one of the nations's biggest office and retail landlords, has surprised skeptics by whittling down its trade-show and furniture-showroom division.
