Art Van Furniture Breaks Record

By Home Furnishings Business in on August 6, 2012

Art Van Furniture met its goal to break the Guinness World Record of building the tallest stack of mattresses.

The Warren, Mich.-based retailer stacked king size King Koil mattresses 14 1/2 feet high breaking the previous record. The previous record of mattresses stacked at 13 1/2 feet was set by Mattress Firm last year.

"A big part of setting a world record is having fun, and we did just that," said David Van Elslander, vice president of Art Van PureSleep.  "This is just another event that solidifies Art Van's commitment to fun, style and unpredictability.

"We're very excited because this accomplishment will officially put Art Van in the record books," he said. "We will always be known for great value in our merchandise and strong dedication to our community, but we're also devoted to creating some unexpected and sometime unpredictable good times."

HW Home Cyclist Team Pedals to Raise Money

By Home Furnishings Business in Community/Charitable Support on August 6, 2012

The HW Home Girls cyclist team recently participated in the 23rd annual Courage Classic benefitting the Children's Hospital of Colorado.

The HW Home Girls have raised $20,288 for this years ride and are looking to add to that total. Boulder, Colo.-based HW Home has sponsored the HW Home Girls cycling team for the last four years. The team rides under team captain and Boulder store manager, Bev Needham, who has been riding for the team for more than 21 years. Needham also has a daughter who is a nurse at Children's Hospital Colorado.

The ride is a three-day, 157-mile trek. More than 2,000 cyclists participated in this year's event through strenuous mountain passes.

Children's Hospital of Colorado served 163,736 patients in 2011, and  expects to see more infants, kids and teens in the years to come. A portion of Courage Classic fund raising also goes to the Hospital Sports Program, which helps patients with physical disabilities experience freedom from physical challenges through activities like skiing, snowboarding, fishing and cycling.

This year the HW Home Girls teamed with Team Danze to combine their donations to create a $50,000 endowment that will allow them to determine how the funds will be allocated. In order to reach their goal, they are accepting donations through Aug. 31.

Interested parties can donate directly to team captain Bev Needham online by clicking on Donate to My Ride.
