The Greater Metropolitan Furnishings Association (GMFA) will host its awards dinner and dance Saturday, Dec. 1 honoring three furniture industry leaders.
The Howard Liveright Award, given to an individual who has made outstanding contributions in the home furnishings industry goes to Mehmet Y. Bilici. Bilici is the founder and managing partner of Sunset International Trade, a furniture wholesale company located in Paterson, N.J. He is also the owner of Furniture Expo, one of New Jersey's largest furniture showrooms and home to the entire Istikbal catalog.
Bilici established Sunset International in 2002, forming a partnership with Istikbal Furniture, the single largest furniture manufacturer in Turkey. Ten years later, Sunset International has found favor with more than 2,000 independent retailers, including Top 100 chain-stores such as El Dorado, Raymour & Flanigan, American Signature, American TV, and JCPenney.
The Jerry Gans Memorial Award will be presented to Irwin Friedman of New Jersey-based retail powerhouse Crest/Value City Furniture. Friedman is a veteran retailer who joined Barney's Furniture of Paterson, N.J., and Newark, N.J., in 1958 as an entry-level salesman. He remained at Barney's for 37 years, rising to the principal executive position before joining Simon Kaplan at Crest/Value City Furniture that grew from 43 to 370 employees during his tenure there.
"If you think about all the positive things that the Jerry Gans Memorial Award stands for, and the way my father lived," said Andy Gans, a GMFA board member and president of Gans Brothers, "Irwin is the perfect recipient. He is as dedicated, loyal and hard working as they get."
Rick Aaronson will receive the Charles B. Costar Dean of IHFRA Award given to an individual who sets an example in the industry through their service and dedication to IHFRA and their local chapter.
Aaronson is an active member of the Greater Metropolitan Furnishings Association and was president of its predecessor organization MFA. He and his partners Tony Bellasosa and Chris Clarizio cover Metro New York, New Jersey, southern Connecticut and the Hudson Valley for Klaussner Furniture. He is an industry veteran who started his furniture career at Eclipse Sleep Products, served as regional sales manager for National Mattress Co. and was vice president of sales and marketing for Deville Furniture.
"This year, we have three important honorees who exemplify the best the furniture business has to offer," said Patrick Cory, managing partner of Cory First Home Delivery and president of the Greater Metropolitan Furnishings Association. "They give freely of their time, energy and enthusiasm, year after year, to support our industry and charitable causes. Each is known for bringing extraordinary value to their customers, for creating jobs and supporting their colleagues."
The event will be held at The Palisadium in Cliffside, N.J.
"This important event presents an opportunity for retailers, reps, manufacturers and suppliers to network with industry friends while enjoying great food, an open bar, music and dancing," said Alan Granetz, executive director of GMFA. "Once again we've taken great care to hold this event at an outstanding venue centrally located for members and guests just minutes from the George Washington Bridge."

The Antique & Design Center is joining forces with Market Square & Suites to produce "Bidazzled!", a live and online auction benefitting the local chapters of Habitat for Humanity and Second Harvest Food Bank.
"Food and shelter relief could not be a more perfect fit for the home furnishings industry," said Karen Luisana, managing director of the Antique & Design Center. "We invite all Market attendees to join us for what will be a fun and exciting event designed to benefit these worthy causes."
The live auction, complete with a cocktail party hosted by Market Square & Suites, is set for Sunday, Oct. 14, at 6:30 p.m., under the tent in the Market Square/Century Courtyard and is open to all High Point Market attendees. Live auction bidding begins at 7 p.m. on the collection of antiques donated by exhibitors in the Antique & Design Center, and new merchandise provided by tenants of Market Square & Suites and other showroom buildings owned by International Market Centers.
According to Luisana, the community is encouraged to participate in the auction via real-time online bidding in support of the local charities.
"Benefitting Habitat for Humanity and Second Harvest Food Bank, this is a Market event designed to give back to the local community, and I think it's important for the community to get involved," Luisana said. "As citizens of the Triad, we hear all the time about how we all benefit from the proximity of the High Point Market, yet many have never experienced the trade-only event first-hand. The Bidazzled Auction is a window into all the amazing products that are unveiled here twice each year, and offers an exciting opportunity for members of the surrounding communities to participate in the High Point Market in support of two important local causes."
Merchandise for "Bidazzled!" has been donated by more than 60 exhibitors, with new pieces arriving daily. "We're accepting auction donations from exhibitors right up until the time bidding starts," Luisana said.
Currently, antiques up for bid include numerous original works of art, an early 19th century harp made by I & I ERAT London, England, a monumental 19th century hand- carved and hand-painted Chinese gilded alter table, and an unsigned, mystical, mid-century hand-carved wooden tree sculpture called, "Zen," courtesy of Luisana Designs and Antiques.
New merchandise includes an upholstered chair from the Candice Olson Highland House collection, and a myriad of items to covet donated by some of the Market's most well-respected exhibitors, including American Leather, Asian Loft, Capel Rugs, Feizy Rugs, Fine Art Tapestries, Thomas & Gray, Thibaut Fine Furniture and fine antiques dealer Randall Tysinger.
The auction will be conducted by William Chandler Eshleman, Chandler's Auction & Estate Sales. With a 20-plus year career as an upscale antiques dealer, the Charlotte, N.C.-based auctioneer is currently in pilot production for a high-end appraisal and auction television show on ABC.
Items may be viewed online this week. Interested parties should register.

Art Van Furniture will donate $1 million to a southeast Michigan food rescue organization. The Art Van Million Dollar Charity Challenge donation will be presented this morning at the launch of Forgotten Harvest's Good Neighbor Campaign.
