ISPA Adds Near 80 New Members

By Home Furnishings Business in on January 29, 2013  The International Sleep Products Association welcomed nearly 80 new members in 2012.

Those included start-up companies, veteran mattress producers, component suppliers, and ISPA€™s newest membership category, manufacturers of top-of-bed accessories.

€œWe at Boyd Specialty Sleep Products see the value in belonging to a uniting front like ISPA,€ said new ISPA member and Boyd Specialty Sleep Products President Denny Boyd. €œWe look forward to actively participating in ISPA and helping advance the interests of this industry."

€œIn addition to being a part of a worthwhile professional community, we work collectively as a united group, which exponentially increases our chances of success,€ said ISPA Chair Gerry Borreggine.

New member Conor Stapelton of Gabriel Scientific and SleepAngel(http://www.sleepangelworld.com) noted ISPA's work in supporting the industry with resources and work to represent producers in Washington.

€œSleepAngel is a start-up business aiming to get big quickly. At this point in our business life cycle, we depend upon the network, resources and lobbying of an umbrella organization to advance our own interests," he said. "ISPA helped us to expand our market reach and influence stakeholders in our marketplace that otherwise would not have been available to us. We hope our association will continue to be a long and caring one."

€œWe would not be who we are today without the strong and continued support of our members,€ noted ISPA President Ryan Trainer. €œISPA is deeply engaged today in addressing several important industry-wide challenges and opportunities.  Now more than ever it is important for this industry to speak and act with a united voice.  We look forward to working with these new member companies and welcome their input and contributions to ISPA€™s programs.€

Surya Wins Product Design Award

By Home Furnishings Business in on January 29, 2013 Home furnishings and rug vendor Surya received two recognitions for excellence in rug design from America€™s Magnificent Carpet Awards.

Produced by AmericasMart Atlanta, in conjunction with partners Sandow Media and the Oriental Rug Importers Association, the gala awards honor top rug introductions for the year. Held each year during the International Atlanta Area Rug Market, these awards allow market visitors to explore the Museum of New Introductions, a gallery of the best new designs and constructions from the nation€™s top rug manufacturers. 
 
The annual ceremony, presented at the Georgia Aquarium earlier this month, honored two of Surya€™s more recent design introductions. In the category of Hand-Loomed, Hand-Tufted / Suggested Retail of $8.01-$16.00 per Square Foot, the brand was recognized for BAN-3326 from the Banshee Collection.

Surya also received nods in the Licensee Design/Any Retail Price category for the graphic FAL-1036 from the Fallon Collection by Jill Rosenwald.

Morris Sets New Ashley Store

By Home Furnishings Business in on January 29, 2013 Morris Furniture will open a new Ashley Furniture HomeStore in Cincinnati this spring.

The new 25,000 square foot showroom in the Eastgate Crossing Shopping Center will include an expanded selection of mattresses in The Better Sleep Shop.

The store openings will add 25 new jobs to the Morris' current employment.

 Co., Inc. says, €œWe are excited to bring our Ashley Furniture HomeStore and Better Sleep Shop showrooms to the growing Eastgate shopping area," said Larry Klaben, president and CEO of Fairborn, Ohio-based Morris Furniture. "We opened our first Ashley Furniture HomeStore in Cincinnati in 2004, and the response has been fantastic. This new location will allow us to bring America's number one home furnishings brand closer to many Cincinnati shoppers already visiting our Tri-County and Florence locations and will allow customers to 'Get More without Paying More.'"

"We are looking for sales and support stars to join our growing company. Ideal candidates know what it means to give outstanding service to our customers, have an interest in home furnishings and want to bring fun and enthusiasm to our new showroom," said Morris Furniture Human Resource Manager Dan W. Little. "In addition, every Ashley Furniture HomeStore associate must truly believe that the customer always comes first."

Morris Furniture Co. Inc started in Dayton in 1947 and currently operates 21 retail showrooms throughout Dayton, Cincinnati, Columbus and Northern Kentucky. The company opened a Springdale Morris Home Center in November 2010. This 5-store complex was built next to the company's existing Ashley Furniture HomeStore near the Tri-County Mall. The company also operates a 110,000 square foot Morris Home Center in Florence at 8040 Burlington Pike.

Consumer Confidence Drops

Consumer confidence continued to slip in January, falling to its lowest level since November 2011, the Conference Board said Tuesday.

The group's monthly Consumer Confidence Index fell to 58.6 in January, down 8.1 points from the month before.

"Consumer confidence posted another sharp decline in January, erasing all of the gains made through 2012," said Lynn Franco, director of economic indicators, in a statement.
